From the Chairman’s Desk
Leadership is the cornerstone of progress and development. The challenges faced by Africa today stem from a profound leadership deficit. Until we cultivate the right kind of leaders—visionary, ethical, and transformational—our continent and the world at large will continue to face uncertainty. 
Leadership and Mentorship: A Lifelong Commitment
Leadership, and by extension, mentorship, has always been a subject of great interest to me. Over the course of my service to Nigeria, Africa, and the international community at large, I have been privileged to observe that the developmental challenges confronting the African continent, in particular, are the result of a deep-seated leadership crisis.
I have therefore come to the conclusion that until we have the right type of leaders, Africa—and indeed the world—will remain volatile, complex, and ambiguous.
The Dilemma of Leadership
The issue of leadership often poses a dilemma to analysts due to its numerous dimensions. Leadership encompasses various philosophies and types, including political leadership, managerial leadership, and religious leadership, each deserving independent analytical consideration.
What is Leadership?
Leadership is about identifying problems, initiating changes that drive sustainable improvement, and ensuring that what is initiated is brought to completion. Simply put, leadership is the ability to inspire, direct, motivate, and propel others towards a common goal. A leader’s primary responsibility is to guide others to achieve set objectives.
A Vision for the Future
With these principles in mind, I conceived the idea of establishing a unique, world-class leadership institute in April 2023. This institute is dedicated to producing a new generation of leaders, grounded in moral leadership, transformational leadership, servant leadership, authentic leadership, strategic leadership, visionary leadership, and more.
The establishment of the Olusegun Obasanjo Leadership Institute is my contribution to human development and a legacy I hope will foster enduring leadership excellence.
